The deadline to register young women in Grades 5 to 9 in Girls Club, a program designed to encourage women in engineering, is fast approaching.
The first Girls Club event will be held Saturday, Jan. 17 at the Spencer Engineering Building at The University of Western Ontario between 1-4 p.m. During the program, which meets every other Saturday during the winter, students will learn about the four major disciplines of engineering: chemical, mechanical, civil and electrical.
The meetings include science experiments, games, guest speakers, snacks and other activities.
Girls Club is part of Discovery Western, an award winning not-for-profit organization that aims to promote awareness of science, engineering and technology among young people. Girls Club is part of Discovery Western’s mission to break down gender-biased stereotypes and develop a strong female interest in engineering.
The program costs $75 for the six days and includes the cost of materials, guest speakers, healthy snacks and drinks, as well as a take-home project and a special surprise party at the end of the program.
Registration is available on Discovery Western’s website or by contacting Katherine Down and Madeline Merner at 519-661-2111 ext. 88826.
