University of Western Ontario Mustangs won gold in wrestling and fencing, and set a track and field record over the weekend.
Western Mustangs women’s wrestling rookie Sam Stewart won the individual gold in the 51 kg division and was named OUA rookie of year on Feb. 14.
The first-year Brescia student defeated Guelph’s Jenni Kaija, 6-0, 6-0 in the final. Two weeks earlier, Stewart won the Provincial Junior Open title (U-20 years).
Women’s captain Lesley McCallum also captured the individual gold in the 55-kg division leading the Mustangs to an overall second-place team finish behind defending champions Brock.
Following a game win against the Waterloo Warriors 81-63 at Alumni Hall on Feb. 14, Western’s men’s basketball team clinches the OUA West Division Title with two games remaining in the regular season, and with it, home court for the OUA playoffs and a first-round bye.
Western will host an OUA West semifinal on Saturday, Feb. 28 at Alumni Hall.
Western’s graduating senior players will be honoured at a post-game ceremony on the court on Feb. 18 when the Mustangs host Windsor.
With an outstanding team performance, the Mustangs women’s volleyball team upset the Brock Badgers 3-1 in the OUA quarter-finals at Alumni Hall, Feb. 13. With the win, the Mustangs will move on to the OUA Final Four on Feb. 20-21 at York.
In track and field, Mustangs team member Jason Kerr won the 60m to set a meet and school record at the Windsor Team Challenge Feb. 13-14. Kerr is currently ranked second in the country.
Western’s Mark Jones won the Desjarlais Trophy men’s epee gold medal at the 2009 OUA Fencing Championships on Feb. 15. The Western women’s fencing team earned four bronze medals in individual and team competition.
