In an effort to better understand the process of birth and fetal health, members of Western’s MRC Reproductive Biology Group attached stainless steel wires to fetal lambs to monitor activity during pregnancy.
· Results were to be used in understanding similar processes in human subjects.
· According to a survey by Director of Housing A.K. Knill the academic performance of first-year students living in residence, as opposed to those who lived elsewhere, did not differ notably. Knill hoped to conduct further research on an individual residence basis to aid in the planning of activity schedules.
· Western’s Native Youth on Campus Program was to commence its 11th year by introducing 25 native high school students to the university environment. The program’s goal was to encourage the students to pursue a university education by providing employment in campus labs and offices.
· Unlike his predecessor Alfred Apps, Jeff Singer, Western’s USC president-elect, did not plan to develop a high media profile. Instead, he emphasized the need for good relations and teamwork in attaining his initiatives. Increasing student representation in campus food services and supporting financially disadvantaged students were among these goals.
· Frank H. Little, Western’s chief legal advisor, planned to retire from active law practice after more than 40 years of service. Little cited his time in the position as including a number of interesting experiences. However, he stated that the position was not as glamorous as it appeared, with most work being done “behind the scenes”.
