Mustangs goalie Brad Topping turned away 30 shots to help Western’s men’s hockey team beat the McGill Redmen 2-1 to win the Queen’s Cup at Thompson Arena on Saturday night.
Keaton Turkiewicz scored for the Mustangs and assisted on Ryan Martinelli’s first-period goal, while Topping was named Most Valuable Player for his effort.
The victory was Western’s third OUA title and their first Queen’s Cup triumph since 2004-05.
“It was very exciting, and a great effort by our guys,” said Western’s head coach Clarke Singer.
Both the Mustangs and Redmen have already qualified for the national championship tournament in Thunder Bay, Ont., where Western will look to continue their post-season success.
