The University of Western Ontario had 792 employees earning $100,000 or more in 2008, according to the annual salary disclosure list released March 31.
Western $100,000+ payroll in 2008 registered a 62-person increase from the 2007 list – about 8.5 per cent more.
“I think the overarching message would be is that we, at the board level, feel that it’s important that we continue to attract the best faculty and staff and to remain competitive, and so consequently our decisions about compensation are based on that principle,” says Board of Governors Chair Michelle Noble.
Noble says the majority of the increases to the list are among faculty members, which reflects the impact of the current contract and the increase in numbers over $100,000. Noble noted the $100,000 figure is a 13-year-old threshold yet to be adjusted by the province.
Ontario’s 1996 Public Sector Disclosure Act requires public institutions to disclose a list of individuals with income that met or exceeded $100,000, as reflected on their T4 slips. Also outlined on the list are taxable benefits.
Ivey Dean Carol Stephenson topped the list in 2008 with a salary of $395,599, with $154.65 in taxable benefits; followed by President Paul Davenport at $384,375, plus taxable benefits of $21,137.49; and Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry Dean Carol Herbert at $349,200, with taxable benefits of $154.65.
Employees with salaries of $100,000 or more represent about 21 per cent of Western’s total faculty and staff complement.
