Around the world, the news media has often been credited as a catalyst for change. A conference that gets under way Saturday, April 25 at The University of Western Ontario is set to examine the role that mass media and communications play in the larger political, economic and social changes occurring in post communist Ukraine.
The conference is sponsored by three institutions, The University of Western Ontario, the University of Toronto, and the National University of the Kyiv Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA) in Ukraine. It is being held over two days at two campuses, one day at Western, and one day at U of T.
“Communication is a basic feature of human behaviour, and it has been at the centre of Ukraine’s transformation process from glasnost to the present,” says Marta Dyczok, an Associate Professor of History at Western with a joint appointment with Political Science. Dyczok is a co-organizer of the conference.
“In spite of this, mass media and its impact have not been closely studied in relation to the transformations in Ukraine, and, more broadly, in relation to how a country transitions to democracy.”
The conference will bring together an international group of top scholars and practitioners who conduct research and work in various aspects of media, journalism and communications in Ukraine.
It takes place on Saturday, April 25 at Western’s Windermere Manor, 200 Collip Circle and continues on Monday, April 27 at U of T’s Munk Centre for International Studies,1 Devonshire Place, Room 108, North Building.
