More than 100 bright, young scientists in Grades 6-12 from more than 20 schools across the London region will participate in the 39th annual London District Science and Technology Fair (LDSTF) April 3-5, hosted by The University of Western Ontario.
The event will be held at the Faculty of Education in the Althouse Building at Western, bringing the LDSTF back to its roots where the first fair was held in 1970.
Judging of the science projects by more than 80 local scientific, industry and educational leaders will take place on Saturday, April 4 from 9 a.m.–2:30 p.m., and public viewing will be available the same day from 2:30 p.m.–3:30 p.m.
The awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, April 5 from 2 p.m.–4 p.m. with opening remarks from Janine Pitman and Wilma de Rond, Directors of Education from the Thames Valley District School Board and the London District Catholic School Board respectively.
At the awards ceremony, five winning students will be awarded trips to represent London at the Canada-wide Science Fair in Winnipeg, Manitoba this May. Two other students will be awarded summer research jobs at Western.
Additional special prizes include: the EnviroExpo Award sponsored by ViaRail, the Lawson Health Research Institute Award, the Imagination Award sponsored by Research Western, among others.
In 2008, LDSTF winning students won first, second and third awards at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair, the best result of any regional science fair in Canada. Two alumni have also been recognized in the Top Twenty under Twenty in recent years.
“The LDSTF was such an all around wonderful experience! I received constant help and support from the organizers and volunteers throughout the entire fair. I learned so much and had a great time doing it,” says Carlie Scalesse, 2008 LDSTF participant and winner.
Scalesse is a full time student in the Faculty of Engineering at Western.
