The University of Western Ontario Physical Plant Department is encouraging the campus community to participate in this year’s Energy Conservation Week May 17-23, enacted by the Ontario Power Authority (OPA).
The goal of the week-long campaign is to raise awareness about energy consumption.
The OPA maintains that there is no better time to be conscious of our personal energy habits, as Ontario will need to replace 80% of its existing electricity supply over the next 20 years. The demand can be alleviated with a combination of new supply and – more importantly – an enduring ‘culture of conservation.’
Energy Conservation Week provides Western with an opportunity to demonstrate leadership when it comes to saving energy, money, and the environment. One way to save energy is by powering down electronic devices and lights when they are not in use.
Participants can access documents and information, such as ‘Energy Conservation Week 100 conservation ideas’ poster, through the campaign website (www.energyconservationweek.ca).
In support of the OPA initiative, Physical Plant will also be highlighting some of the conservation stories of the past year on the Environment & Sustainability website (uwo.ca/ppd/sustainability).
