Volleyball player Garrett May and wrestler Valerie Ouellette have been named the Western Mustangs Goodlife Fitness Athletes of the Week for Feb. 4-10.
May, a third-year Social Sciences student, helped the Mustangs men’s volleyball team to back-to-back wins on the weekend, taking down the Ryerson Rams and Toronto Varsity Blues. The Toronto native led Western in scoring on both nights, racking up 17 points in each victory, and continues to lead the country in points per set, averaging 5.2 per set.
“Garrett continues to play consistently every week, and we’re looking forward to that continuing into the playoffs,” said head coach Jim Sage.
Ouellette, a second-year Brescia University College student, helped the Mustangs women’s wrestling team to a third-place finish at the Western Open Saturday. The Campbellton, N.B., native had a strong day on the mats, winning gold in the 48 kg weight class.
“Val had a solid performance at the Western Open and is stepping up leading into the OUAs. Val had three good matches over the weekend; she was selective and used good tactics in her matches to put in a solid performance. I know it’s her goal to make the Junior World team this summer and she’ll be a top contender to qualify for Team Canada,” said head coach Ray Takahashi.
