Western’s School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies hosts its third annual Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition on Thursday, April 10, as graduate students compete to present their research in less than three minutes to an audience of judges and peers.
A group of 20 students selected from preliminary heats will present in the final round of competition from 3-4:30pm in the Davenport Theatre, located in Western’s Talbot College.
The winner from Western’s finals will then move on to attend the provincial competition, taking place on Thursday, April 24 in Hamilton.
The aim of the exercise is to help students develop the skills and capacity to effectively explain their research to an intelligent but non-specialist audience.
The competition was started by the University of Queensland, Australia. Enthusiasm for the 3MT grew and its adoption by numerous universities led to the development of an international competition in 2010. Western was one of the first Canadian universities to host a 3MT competition in April 2012.
