RCMP laid 16 additional criminal charges Wednesday against Stephen Arthuro Solis-Reyes, a Western Computer Science student, as part of an ongoing investigation related to inappropriate access to computer networks through a commercial software problem that was named Heartbleed.
Three of the charges concern incidents involving Western. It is alleged that access was gained into computers in restricted areas of the university. As soon as Western became aware of the potential breach, steps were taken to shut down the access and individuals that could have potentially been impacted were contacted and informed of the steps they should take to ensure their personal information was protected.
Wednesday’s charges are in addition to related charges laid against Solis-Reyes in April. This matter is now before the courts and Western is limited in what it can say out of respect for the legal process.
