Continuing the work of the Middlesex-London Health Unit in raising awareness of the issues surround violence in hockey – from house league to professional teams – a Violence in Hockey Symposium is scheduled for Tuesday (Feb. 24) at the London Convention Centre.
Guest speakers, including a number of Western professors, will provide their perspectives on the role of violence in hockey. Through the day-long (8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.) discussions, the symposium will explore ways to encourage a game that focuses on the positive aspects of the sport, while seeking an elimination of unnecessary violence in sports.
Western guest speakers include:
• Kevin Wamsley (Faculty of Health Sciences and former director of the International Centre for Olympic Studies) – Violence in Hockey: A History
• Donald Gorassini (Psychology, King’s University College) – In The Game: The Rules, presenting the data from Effects of Rule and Enforcement Changes in the National Hockey League study.
• Peter Jaffe (Faculty of Education) – Outside The Game
Also in attendance will be Western alumnus Scott Russell (BA’80, BEd’81, MA’85), along with Middlesex-London Medical Officer of Health Graham Pollett, Ontario Minister of Health Promotion Margarett Best, and former London Knights and Team Canada captain Dave Simpson, among others.
