As part of the East-West Bowl events at The University of Western Ontario, youth aged 14 to 18 are encouraged to participate in the Be the Best Lineman camp which will be held from May 8-10 at TD Waterhouse Stadium.
The camp will focus on the basic fundamentals of offensive and defensive line play for young players.
“The Be the Best Lineman camp is important for young players because line play technique is something most teams do not focus on in regular practices. The coaches will also benefit from the camp by learning from each other’s outstanding expertise,” says Greg Marshall, head coach of the Western Mustangs and one of this year`s camp directors.
The camp will teach techniques based on drills for specific parts of the game, including run blocking, pass protection and pass rush. The all-star coaching staff is comprised of both professional and university coaches who will ensure a quality learning experience for the players. The coaches are Adriano Belli, Terry Bitka, Roger Dunbrack, Chad Folk, Greg Marshall, Jim McNally, Dennis McPhee, Taylor Robertson and Jeff Watson.
McNally held a 28-year career as an offensive line coach in the National Football League. He coached for the Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, Carolina Panthers and New York Giants. McNally is a legend in football coaching and will provide invaluable lessons for the players.
McPhee, the head coach of the Waterloo Warriors, brings with him a wealth of experience as the former defensive line coach for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats from 1996 to 2002. His strong work ethic and positive attitude will be beneficial to the camp.
“The coaches we have participating at this year’s camp speak for themselves. Their dedication to the game and their drive for player success will have a great impact on the players attending the camp,” says Gary Jubenville, the camp co-ordinator for the Western Mustangs and coordinator of the lineman camp.
The three on-field sessions and three in-class sessions over the weekend will provide potential future Canadian Interuniversity Sport players with the tools they need to move to the next level in football. The unique nature of the topic and the exceptional coaching staff will be attributable to the camp’s success.
