Engineering is often viewed as a male-dominated profession, a gender stereotype challenged by Professional Engineers Ontario President and Senior Vice President of Morrison Hershfield Limited Catherine Karakatsanis.
Karakatsanis will speak about “Maximizing our Potential” at the Lynda Shaw Memorial Distinguished Lecture Series on Thursday, April 1. She will be discussing the need for the engineering profession to address the gender stereotypes that prevent young women from studying in male-dominated fields and the importance of providing female role models to give young women confidence and inspiration to reach their full potential.
The Faculty of Engineering talk will be held 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Spencer Engineering Building, Room 3109.
Lynda Shaw was a graduate of Centennial Secondary School in Brampton where she received an Ontario Scholarship and was the winner of the school’s proficiency award in Mathematics and Accounting. Lynda entered Western with an Admission Scholarship in 1987 and served for two years on the Mechanical Engineering Club Executive.
The Lynda Shaw Memorial Distinuished Lecture Series was established in memory of the third-year mechanical engineering student who was murdered near Highway 401 in 1990.
