The University of Western Ontario had 894 employees earning $100,000 or more in 2009, according to the annual salary disclosure list released today (March 31).
More than 100 people have been added to list of those on the $100,000+ payroll this year, an increase of 12.9 per cent from 2008.
“We have some extremely talented individuals at our university. That list reflects the goal of this university to continue to retain and recruit some of the best individuals in the university environment,” says Frank Angeletti, chair of Western’s Board of Governors.
Ontario’s 1996 Public Sector Disclosure Act requires public institutions to disclose a list of individuals with income that met or exceeded $100,000, as reflected on their T4 slips. Also outlined on the list are taxable benefits.
Angeletti says the $100,000 threshold is outdated and doesn’t reflect the rate of inflation since the bar was set in 1996 for salary disclosure.
“A dollar isn’t worth what it was in 1996 any longer,” he says.
“The board has looked at the issue of the salaries and when we look at it, we believe that it reflects fair compensation. We need to factor in the scope of the responsibilities of that individual, the academic credentials and years of service. We believe (the salary structure) it’s fair and it’s competitive with other universities.”
Carol Stephenson, Dean of the Richard Ivey School of Business, topped the list earning $405,000 in 2009, with $114.20 in taxable benefits, followed by Carol Herbert, Dean of the Schulich School of Medicine, with $339,100 and $114.20 in taxable benefits and John MacDonald, Director of Robarts Research Institute, with $304,619 and $114.20 in taxable benefits. Western President Amit Chakma, who started work on July 1, earned $220,000 in 2009, with $9,294.36 in taxable benefits.
