History professor Jonathan Vance was recognized by the Canadian Authors Association with the Lela Common Award for Canadian History for his book, A History of Canadian Culture.
Vance, who has been recently appointed to the Smallman Chair in History at The University of Western Ontario, is the author of numerous books and articles, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society.
He is a specialist in military and cultural history, war and society in the 20th century, and social memory.
The winners of the Canadian Authors Association’s annual awards competition for literary works published in 2009 were announced during a banquet held on June 26 as part of the CanWrite! conference.
The awards recognize works by Canadian writers who achieve excellence without sacrificing popular appeal. The five finalists were chosen from a total of 297 nominations, including 115 for fiction, 47 for Canadian history, 31 for drama, 94 for poetry and 10 for emerging authors under 30.
The Lela Common Award for Canadian History includes a $2,500 prize and a silver medal.
