With some students experiencing serious mental health problems on university and college campuses, more often than not concerns can first appear in the classroom, residences, or other places outside of health and counseling.
Harvard University professor Richard Kadison will discuss the idea of mental health issues on campus as part of the annual Fall Perspectives on Teaching conference Sept. 1 at Western. He will talk of the challenges facing clinicians, coaches, faculty, student services and residences in helping students navigate successfully through university.
A plenary session will follow to discuss if Kadison’s findings ring true at Western. Panel members will include Gail Hutchinson (Director, Student Development Centre), Peggy Wakabayashi (Director of Residences, Housing and Ancillary Services) and Mike Atkinson (Professor, Department of Psychology).
Sponsored by Western’s Teaching Support Centre, the day’s concurrent sessions will also cover the new Learning Management System, posing effective questions in class, research on teaching at Western and classroom teaching.
Western President Amit Chakma will offer the welcoming remarks.
The conference will be held in Room 2050 of the Social Science Centre from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration is free and can be completed online.
