Due to unprecedented and dangerous wind chill temperatures and blowing snow being forecast, Western has cancelled classes for Tuesday. The university will remain open and continue to provide services on campus.
Environment Canada says over the next 24 hours, cold brisk winds are expected to produce widespread, dangerous wind chills as low as minus 35.
Extreme caution is advised for people heading outdoors as it is not advisable to be out in the cold for long periods or walking from building to building. If you must go out, dress warmly in layers and cover as much exposed skin as possible as skin may freeze in as little as than 5 minutes.
If you suspect frostbite, warm the affected area by placing it next to warmer skin or immerse in warm, but not hot water. Do not rub the affected area. Seek emergency medical treatment for severe cases.
For complete safety and treatment for exposure to cold, you can reference the Middlesex-London Health Unit website.
With the university remaining open, but classes being cancelled, faculty and staff are expected to report to work as long as they can do so safely. Please communicate with your supervisor on any difficulties you have arriving to work tomorrow.
The Ontario Ministry of Transportation’s Winter Driving: Be Prepared, Be Safe! booklet is an educational resource you may find helpful for winter driving conditions.
Please check Western’s weather page, uwo.ca/weather.html, throughout the day for further updates.
