Newsmakers 2011
How will we remember 2011? Probably through these faces.
The Western News’ 2011 Newsmakers section celebrates the best of research, academia and volunteer spirit that we have to offer on this campus. The following spotlight, in brief words and striking images, the accomplishments of some of our favourites from the last year.
Baines: A tribute to a wonderful colleague
Pete was all Western.
Amery: Questioning cited ‘mainstream’ credentials
I congratulate Jason Winders on the balanced article he wrote about professor David Heap and his unwavering commitment to display solidarity with oppressed people everywhere (“The man who won’t go away,” Nov. 24).
Landstreet: Cheers to Heap’s courage
I was very impressed to read about professor David Heap’s participation on the ship Tahrir, which attempted to breach, non-violently, the Israeli blockage of Gaza and draw attention to the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories (“The man who won’t go away,” Nov. 24).
Dancing with Marie Antoinette
Western’s Don Wright Faculty of Music professor Richard Semmens knows all about the dancing, disguises and devious deeds of the Parisian opera ball of 18th century. In fact, he is an expert on it, making him first choice as advisor to a National Geographic filmmaker.
‘Sunday Funday’ helps fill community’s plate
If you cook it, they will come. Just ask Harrison and Becky Glotman.
Addressing mental health in the classroom
Thanks to a donation from former University of Western Ontario graduate student and elementary teacher Walter M. Lobb, the Faculty of Education begins a crucial step in developing a new mental health program and scholarship fund to address the needs of teachers who deal with students’ mental health issues every day.
Track athlete strikes a rhythm at Parapan Am Games
Jacqueline Rennebohm has been in this position before. She has heard the cheers from the international crowds as colourful flags stream across the sky and has felt the butterflies in her stomach while she digs her shoes into the track.
New building gives home to family medicine
The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry’s Department of Family Medicine will have new digs to call its own by 2013.
