An ad hoc committee designated to review the Code of Student Conduct is looking for input from members of The University of Western Ontario community and interested London residents.
The code, which defines the standards of conduct expected of students at Western and disciplinary procedures the university will follow in the case of a breach, was approved by the Board of Governors in May 2001. As part of the policy, the code must be reviewed every five years.
A similar review was performed in 2004.
Brian Timney, chair of the ad hoc committing conducting the review and Dean of the Faculty of Social Science, hopes to engage London residents, as well as students, faculty and staff, in the review process.
“It’s an opportunity to gather information from the greater community,” he says. “We’ll take any and all submissions that people have.”
Timney says the code has so far been effective, the review allows the committee to re-examine other issues that have arisen since it was enacted.
Written submissions can be addressed to Dr. Brian Timney, Dean, Faculty of Social Science, c/o University Secretariat, Room 290 Stevenson-Lawson Building, or to timney@uwo.ca. The deadline for receipt of written submissions is Feb. 9, 2009. Oral submissions will also be accepted.
Individuals also wishing to meet with the committee should indicate this in their written submissions.
The committee’s report, including recommended revisions to the code, will be submitted to the Board of Governors in April 2009.
