Berman was honoured as one of the most articulate, rigorous and innovative researchers in the field of violence against women and girls. Her body of work has changed the way we think about girls/young women, their experiences of war, violence, marginalization and isolation, as well as the enormous creativity and strength they bring to dealing with these challenges. She is currently engaged in bringing similar recognition to the challenges and strengths of boys/young men.
