The Department of English and the Faculty of Media Studies at The University of Western Ontario are hosting a unique, cross-disciplinary forum on ‘transmedia’ on Friday, March 6.
Students and faculty from several disciplines, including English, media studies, film, law, and sociology, will gather to discuss how old and new media combine and conflict in contemporary culture.
The free event will cover a range of topics from the interaction between hip hop and journalism, to fan fiction and intellectual property law, to Web 2.0 and Second Life.
The global “copyfight”—the relationship between intellectual property law and digital media—hit closer to home in Canada last fall, with the government’s tabling of Bill C-61, which proposed sweeping and controversial copyright reforms.
University of New Brunswick communications professor Daniel Downes (Interactive Realism, 2005) will deliver the keynote, “Pirate Nations: Culture vs. Property in the Media Commons.”
The event will offer a opportunity for students and researchers across disciplines to share ideas, methods, and technologies for understanding today’s increasingly complex media environment.
The keynote and morning sessions will take place in SH 3315 from 8:30 to 11:15 a.m. The afternoon sessions and a panel talk will follow from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. in NCB 296. Admission is free and complimentary coffee will be available.
