Telfer SOGS president
Rick Telfer has been voted the 2009-10 president of the Society of Graduate Students, defeating candidate Sarah Detombe by about 100 votes. Just over 600 students voted, March 11-13, with Telfer taking 353 votes and Detombe 251 votes.
Memorial Service set
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 21 for Paul Gaudet, Professor Emeritus (English). The service will be held at 11 a.m. in Conron Hall, Room 224 University College. A reception will follow in Room 225. Gaudet died Feb. 1 at the age of 66. The one-time chair of English joined the department in the late 1960s and had 31 years of service when he retired in 1998. An Acadian from Prince Edward Island, Gaudet was a varsity athlete and a gifted singer, performing for 30 years in London choirs, notably with Pro Musica. Gaudet is survived by his spouse Minnette, professor emerita in the Department of French Studies.
London Tech Week
London Tech Week is the only week of the year dedicated to raising awareness about the city’s technology sector. This year the event runs from March 30 to April 3 and features a Town Hall Forum & Networking Luncheon on March 31. The forum will feature a keynote presentation and moderated discussion on developing London into a “tech-smart” city – a globally competitive and leading tech community. A free community mixer on April 2 will recognize outstanding achievements of the local technology sector. Everyone is invited to participate. Writer and researcher Michael Petrou will give a presentation based on his recently released book: Renegades: Canadians in the Spanish Civil War” (UBC Press, 2008). The talk takes place March 23 at 1:30 (UC 224a, next door to Conron Hall) and is sponsored by the departments of Modern Languages and History. Medical doctor, author and aid worker Samantha Nutt has worked for more than 13 years in some of the world’s most active war zones with War Child Canada, the United Nations and non-governmental organizations. Her ‘office’ has included Iraq, Afghanistan, Congo, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Burundi, northern Uganda and the Thai-Burmese border. Nutt is one of a select group of Canadians declared among Canada’s ‘Top 40 under 40 Award. She will present a lecture March 25, 7-9 p.m., Spencer Engineering Room 1200, on Starting an NGO, staying motivated and the power of the media. The London North Centre federal Liberals will hold a policy committee forum March 24 to explore the topics: Canada’s policy on research and post-secondary education: Who pays? Who should pay? Former Mustangs football coach Larry Haylor is among the six new inductees into the Wall of Champions, the Mustangs football hall of fame. The induction dinner will be held on April 22. Other inducted players include: post-70s fullback Duane Forde (1987-90) and linebacker Kevin Ford (1977-81); pre-70s quarterback George Arnott (1947-50) and star quarterback Ray Truant (1950-52); and the 1959 Western Mustangs football team. The dinner, which will be held in the Great Hall, was founded in 2004 to recognize individuals who have made significant contribution to Mustangs football.
