The University Students’ Council (USC) is bringing University of Western Ontario student artwork to the University Community Centre through the USC Public Art Gallery Program.
USC President Stephen Lecce says he is fulfilling his campaign promise to bring more art to the student hub. The USC is soliciting artwork by students to add to the temporary display in the building.
On Tuesday, the first installment was made in the entrance foyer of The Wave and features two photorealistic mug shots painted by Faculty of Arts and Humanities student Laura Payne. The artwork will be on display for about month.

The USC has partnered with local community group, the Open House Arts Collective, to develop this new program to promote Western students’ art on campus.
“Students desire a forum or medium for students to display their art, as well as give student artists the recognition and attention they deserve. It builds a community within the UCC,” says Lecce, adding the USC has received requests to incorporate more culture and student expressions into the UCC.
Lecce says the addition of the artwork is a multi-phased project, and is expected to expand to include a rotating display of student artwork in various locations of the building.
“Our hope is to have a wide breadth of art being displayed across the UCC in public spaces,” he says. “This is one way to support student artists on our campus.”
