George Warecki, associate professor of history, is this year’s recipient of the Brescia University College Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award will be presented at convocation on June 8.
Recipients of the Brescia Award for Excellence in Teaching are members of faculty who have made an outstanding contribution to the academic development of students. Warecki was nominated for the award by former students who spoke of his passion for teaching as evidenced through the time and effort he puts into the preparation of his classes, his use of varied teaching techniques, his willingness to meet with students, and his role as a mentor.
One former student wrote of “Dr. Warecki’s dedication to his students, which extends beyond the classroom.” Another described his “devotion to strengthening the fundamental learning skills of each student.” Warecki is a leader and educator who inspires his students. In recognition of his dedication and skill, he has been on the Dean’s Honor Roll for teaching every year since the inception of this distinction in 2000-2001.
Warecki completed his PhD in Canadian History at McMaster University (1989), an MA in History at the University of Western Ontario (1983), and his BA in History at King’s University College (1982). Warecki is a member of the Canadian Historical Association, the Ontario Historical Society, the Forest History Society and the American Society for Environmental History.
Warecki joined Brescia as a part-time member of faculty in 1993 and was appointed to full-time status in 2002. He has been a tenured Associate Professor at Brescia since 2004. Warecki is also an Adjunct Professor to the Department of History in Western’s Faculty of Social Science, and is a member of the Faculty of Graduate Studies at Western.
The decision of the selection committee was based on a dossier consisting of documentation regarding Warecki’s commitment as an educator to teaching, students, and the broader London community. He is an exemplary teacher from whom students learn how to think critically and to participate actively in their learning. The dossier is available for viewing in the Office of the Academic Dean, Brescia University College, and will be placed in the Beryl Ivey Library after June 8.
