A common hurdle for companies in the race for talent is whether to sink efforts into recruiting the best and brightest or to develop them within.
Glenn Rowe, Associate Professor of Strategic Management and the Paul MacPherson Chair in Strategic Leadership at the Richard Ivey School of Business, and Tim Hodgson, CEO of Goldman Sachs Canada, will discuss the pros and cons of “make versus buy” at an upcoming Ivey Idea Forum.
“Finding Your Next Top Talent: Perspectives on transferring leadership and developing stars” will be held on Wednesday, May 20, 8-9:30 a.m., at Ivey Business School’s ING Leadership Centre in Toronto. Breakfast will be served at 7:30 a.m.
Rowe will discuss transferring talent. He’ll draw from his recent research on why General Electric Co. has had success developing more talent than it needs and funnelling its employees to other firms. He’ll also provide examples of professional athletes, sports managers, coaches and captains who shifted between teams and, likewise, stock analysts who moved from one investment bank to another.
Hodgson will complement the presentation by sharing his personal experiences developing talent versus hiring it externally. Goldman Sachs has a long tradition of producing leaders through formal training and on-the-job learning.
“One of the biggest challenges for companies is to create a high-performance team,” says Rowe. “Companies can certainly buy talent, but considerable thought has to go into where to get talent that’s a good fit for the team and how to integrate it.”
The event is part of the Ivey Idea Forum: A Cross-Enterprise Leadership Series, which provides executives, Ivey alumni, business students and prospective students with guest speakers and events to develop cross-enterprise leadership thinking on key business issues.
