The University of Western Ontario community took the opportunity to laud President Paul Davenport Friday afternoon, honouring his 15 years of dedication to the university, which will end June 30 with his retirement.
The farewell reception shone a spotlight on Davenport’s accomplishments, such as raising Western’s entering grade to among the highest in Ontario, substantially increasing research funding and delivering on the university’s mission statement of providing the best student experience.
“You have contributed in a way that is truly special and have changed the face of this university forever,” says University Students’ Council President Emily Rowe, adding Davenport has touched so many students through creating a sense of Western pride.
Western President Paul Davenport shows off a gift received at his community farewell reception Friday afternoon, a T-shirt with the slogan ‘Western provides the best student experience among Canada’s leading research-intensive universities.’
“No matter where you are, always know you’ve made a difference in this world. And no matter what you’re doing, Western will always hold a special place for you – it will be home.”
Western Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Fred Longstaffe wondered aloud what one is supposed to say when mere words are not enough.
“He has brought to life the best student experience – not as a slogan or tag line – but as a way of life, as a direction, as a path for all of us to follow and understand.”
Longstaffe adds Davenport has been transformational as president, changing the face of campus and demonstrating “purple pride” on a daily basis, which he suggests we all need to continue through mirroring Davenport’s energy and commitment.
“The president has been a wise and understanding mentor,” says Longstaffe. “He is someone who has caused me to genuinely believe in the value of my efforts. He has taught me about how to understand and respect the diversity of ideas … that wash across our campus, while at the same time always coming back to core values.
“Paul carries with him our respect, our admiration and our profound gratitude for all he has done for The University of Western Ontario.”
Davenport was presented with a number of gifts, including a T-shirt, mousepad and mug sporting the ‘best student experience’ slogan, for which he has grown famous. Western’s Alumni Association also presented him with an honorary lifetime membership for “endless support of alumni” through energy, focus and outright enthusiasm.
Lori Gribbon Director of Undergraduate Recruitment and Admissions, says the president’s leadership brought together the entire campus, re-shaping the university along the way.
“We have been so fortunate to have shared time together with you,” says Gribbon. “Your passion for Western, your integrity, you ability to relate to others and your vision has enabled Western to move miles beyond where we were in the mid-90s.
“You have left a legacy that will be felt for decades to come. You brought people together to make Western what it is today.”
Davenport thanked his family, in particular his wife Josette, for her patience, understanding and support throughout his time at Western. The couple will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary July 12, soon after retiring to Tours, France.
Often asked his secret to longevity at Western and how he maintained his enthusiasm over the entire 15 years, Davenport is quick to answer.
“It is because I have a lot of fun doing this job, and I have to thank all of you for creating an environment where a president actually has countless opportunities to have a good time,” he says.
From his time at radio station CHRW and participation in student productions, to Mustang Athletics, bike tours in France and teaching through Continuing Studies, Davenport says he was afforded many experiences that were enjoyable and memorable.
“You have allowed me to have fun. It has kept me enthusiastic and loving this job.”
He pondered how one says goodbye after 15 wonderful years, saying he doesn’t know any other way than by simply saying thanks to all faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends.
He says together “we have created a new mission” and made tremendous progress in making Western what it is today.
“Working with others and making a difference is the greatest reward you can have in life,” says Davenport. “So I thank you all for 15 wonderful years. I will miss you, each and everyone.”
