Cook up a cure
A new cookbook highlighting signature recipes of top Canadian chefs is raising money for autism research at Western. Proceeds from the sale of Cooking With Canada’s Best will be contributed to the Kilee Patchell-Evans Autism Research Group. The research group takes a multidisciplinary approach and is primarily located at the Department of Psychology. It includes specialists in epilepsy, neurotransmitter systems, environmental toxins, sex hormones, dietary and bacterial factors. The group was created with support from Canadian Medical Association Medal of Honour recipient David Patchell Evans, the father of an autistic child and founder of GoodLife Fitness. Read more at

Two top athletes have been named to the national team for the Francophonie games being held in Beirut, Lebanon Sept. 27 to Oct. 6. Heptathlete Jennifer Cotten and sprinter Jason Kerr were selected by Sport Canada. Runner Tim Konoval, an incoming graduate student in the Kinesiology Master of Science Program, will represent Canada in the 1,500 metres. Major CFUW award
The Canadian Federation of University Women has awarded one of five Dr. Alice E. Wilson awards valued at $6,000 each to MSc (pathology) student Brenda Hamilton. Her research consists of using DNA probes to help determine if genetic changes are present in histologically benign tumours that may indicate a more aggressive tumour. The work aims to find the best way to predict which patients are at increased risk for a relapse. More information about the organization is available at www.cfuw.org.
Sainani joins Trillium board
Western grad (BESc’83, MESc’86, PhD’96) and former faculty member Devkumar R. Sainani has been appointed to the Ontario Trillium Foundation Board of Directors. Sainani’s volunteer work is extensive, serving on the boards of London’s Grand Theatre, Fanshawe Pioneer Village, the Community Services Coordination Network and Kala Manjari, a local South Asian arts presenting organization. He is the founder and managing partner of The SAINA Group of Companies, an international strategic consulting firm, and is involved with the Temple City Institute of Technology and Engineering, an international engineering college based in Orissa, India. The University Students’ Council will present its annual clubs week Sept. 21-25. Students can speak with organizers of more than 200 clubs to explore new interests. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Atrium and Gym of the University Community Centre.

Fall Orientation
The School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.is presenting the Fall Graduate Student Orientation on Saturday, Sept. 12, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. in the North Campus Building, Room 101. Nominations are again being received for the annual Big Ideas Best Lecturer competition sponsored by education broadcaster TVO. The deadline is Oct. 12. Big Ideas offers lectures on topics ranging across politics, culture, economics, art history and science. The winner’s school receives a $10,000 TD Insurance Meloche Monnex scholarship. Helping older adults
The Western-based Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging (CCAA) is offering workshops in London and Ottawa for professionals working with aging adults. The Functional Fitness for Older Adults workshop will be held Sept. 15-16 in London and Oct. 26-27 in Ottawa. The Restorative Care Education Training workshop will be held Sept. 15-16, 29-30 in London and Oct. 26-29 in Ottawa. The courses are recognized by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.
