Looking at issues facing a growing digital workforce, nearly 50 leading scholars and union activists will participate in the Digital Labour: Workers, Authors, Citizens conference at The University of Western Ontario this weekend.
With an emerging dependence on digital technology in the workplace, issues related to computer-mediated communications – including the outsourcing of tasks that can be performed digitally and more cheaply elsewhere in the world – are becoming increasingly important, yet remain under-studied.
The multi-disciplinary group will relate broad academic concerns to real-world challenges faced in our economy. Hosted by Western’s Faculty of Information and Media Studies, the conference is a first stepping-stone toward creating a new research centre related to digital labour issues.
Panelists for the three-day conference include leading Canadian academics and representatives from the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), Associatiion of Canadian Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA), the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the Writers Guild of Canada (WGC).
