In today’s environment, with companies being buffeted by not only economic upheaval, but also health scares and environmental issues, companies need to focus on resiliency.
Tima Bansal, Professor and Director of the Centre for Building Sustainable Value at Ivey Business School, will host an Ivey Idea Forum on Oct. 6 at the Ivey ING Leadership Centre at The Exchange Tower, about how organizations build resilience through sustainability.
“Organizational Resilience: Surviving and Thriving Through Crises” will begin at 8 a.m. at Ivey’s ING Leadership Centre in Toronto. Bansal, a leading researcher on businesses and sustainability, will present research showing organizations that practise sustainability can better survive crises and tough economies. She will outline best practices associated with sustainable firms.
“Firms that move toward sustainability are looking at the best practices for the long term,” says Bansal. “This long-term vision and the new capabilities that are created through sustainability initiatives may give them an edge to survive, or even thrive, during tough times compared to their less sustainable peers.”
Valerie Chort, Partner and National Leader of EHS (Environment, Health and Safety) and Sustainability & Climate Change Services for Deloitte Enterprise Risk, will discuss how sustainability initiatives are essential to a firm’s resilience and how to accelerate the connection of sustainability actions to a company’s value proposition.
“Corporate instincts may suggest sustainability initiatives should be reduced or even eliminated during economic downturns,” says Chort. “In fact, when linked to an organization’s core business strategy, they are essential to a firm’s resilience.”
The event is part of the Ivey Idea Forum: A Cross-Enterprise Leadership Series, which provides executives, Ivey alumni, business students and prospective students with guest speakers and events to develop cross-enterprise leadership thinking on key business issues.
