University of Western Ontario Mustangs have a lot to celebrate this week with two Ontario University Athletics (OUA) silver medals and a bronze in tennis and golf, and the championship title in men’s baseball. Not to be outdone, the women’s fast pitch team had a perfect winning streak in regular season play.
Women’s tennis wins silver at OUA Championships
The University of Western Ontario women’s tennis team lost 5-2 against The University of Montreal women’s in the OUA Championship gold-medal game on Oct. 18 in Oshawa.
Seeded No. 2 entering the OUA Championships, the Mustangs were guided by coach of the year Mike Richards and several OUA all-stars including Emma Lecavalier, Paige Robinson and Chantal Forristal. The team took home the silver medal.
In men’s play, Western lost 7-0 to Toronto in the bronze-medal match.
Golf teams win OUA silver, bronze
Charles Fitzsimmons shot a two-day total of 138 to win the Ontario University Athletics individual title at the OUA Championships presented by mikeweir.com on Oct. 20 at Angus Glen Golf Course in Markham, Ont.
Fitzsimmons finished the two-day tournament six-under-par, shooting a 68 on Day 2 (-4), capping off in fine fashion by sinking a 12-foot putt for the championship.
The Mustangs team was close to an OUA gold medal, but lost in the tiebreaker.
Western’s women finished in a tie for third place with Waterloo, but won on the tiebreaking fourth-player score.
The women’s team won four previous OUA titles, making this their fifth consecutive OUA medal. They have now won medals every season in OUA women’s golf competition.
Ottawa and Western were tied for first in men’s team scores at 590. The Mustangs men’s team lost out in the first-place tiebreaker by three strokes and earned a silver medal.
Women’s fast pitch undefeated in regular season
Western’s women’s fast pitch softball team defeated York twice (3-2 and 15-6) on Sunday, Oct. 18 at Stronach Park to complete its first-ever undefeated regular season.
The wins make the defending champion Mustangs the number one seed for the 2009 Provincial Championship to be played at Stronach Park in London (Oct. 23-25). The action begins at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
Men’s team wins fourth OUA baseball title in 5 seasons
