University of Western Ontario Mustangs had many highs and lows last weekend as a number of teams wrapped up their seasons with clinch wins and a few disappointing losses.
Women’s Lacrosse
Western’s women’s lacrosse team survived a scare from a Guelph matchup on Oct. 24 to finish in second place in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) regular season.
Western will play Queen’s in the semi-finals at the OUA championships in Hamilton, Ont., hosted by McMaster on Oct. 31-Nov. 1.
Women’s Soccer
The women’s soccer team finished their regular season 6-7-1 and will play at McMaster on Oct. 28 in the OUA quarter-final. Western lost 3-2 to McMaster in the last meeting but defeated them 5-0 two weeks earlier.
Men’s Soccer
The men’s soccer team earned a much-needed win on Oct. 24 at TD Waterhouse Stadium over Guelph but lost 3-0 to York the next day. The Mustangs still managed to sneak into the post-season with help from other squads.
The Mustangs finished 4-6-4 and in sixth place. They will travel to Waterloo today (Oct. 28) to play in the OUA quarter-final.
Baseball
The baseball team were unable to mount a storybook comeback on Oct. 25 at the 2009 CIBA National Championships, as the team was eliminated from the tournament following a 6-2 loss to the Concordia Stingers.
For his play on the weekend, Mustangs Robert Wakefield was named first baseman on the all-tournament team.
Women’s Field Hockey
The Mustangs women’s field hockey team added another win to their record on Oct. 24, improving to 7-3-2. Western placed third and will host the OUA Field Hockey Championships.
Western will open up the OUA championships at TD Waterhouse Stadium on Oct. 30 with a 2 p.m. game against UPEI, with the winner advancing to the semi-finals against Toronto.
