Guy Schultz will begin as the new Program Coordinator of Intramural Sports, Events and Informal Recreation in Campus Recreation on Monday, Jan. 4.
The Department of Sports and Recreation Services at The University of Western Ontario made the announcement Wednesday.
“Guy brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the program area,” says manager of campus recreation, Gareth Cunningham.
Schultz obtained a degree in Physical Education from the University of Alabama, and after teaching for eight years at the high school level in both Ontario and Manitoba, he returned to the university community, serving as the Program Coordinator for Sports Clubs, Intramurals and Special Events, as well as overseeing the Safety Instructional Programs in Campus Recreation at the University of Alberta.
“We are very pleased to welcome Guy back to Western,” says Therese Quigley, director of Sports and Recreation Services at Western. “His reputation as a leader and a committed team player will compliment a very strong, committed staff in Sport and Recreation Services at Western.”
Schultz will be returning to Ontario and to familiar territory at The University of Western Ontario, having graduated with a Masters of Arts in sport history with a focus on women’s involvement in Olympic sport while studying at the International Centre of Olympic Studies in the School of Kinesiology.
He also brings high performance sport experience with him, being a former Western Mustangs athlete and assistant coach for both the track and field and cross country programs.
Schultz will be the latest addition to the Campus Recreation team taking on a leadership role while contributing to the delivery of the Campus Recreation mission and values.
“Guy has a great diversity in both people and program experience that will help foster a team spirit and student leadership development for a very large and important role,” Cunningham says. “We’re delighted to add someone of his character and expertise to assist in our delivery of mission critical programming and the best student experience.”
Intramural Sports at Western, a major element of Guy’s portfolio, sees over 14,000 participants (or over 1,200 teams), facilitated by approximately 10 student leadership positions and close to 200 student officials/referees.
Schultz will work at the Western Student Recreation Centre.
