UWOpera presents Mozart’s tale of the charming rake Don Giovanni, a masterful mix of comedy, melodrama and supernatural elements.
The UWOpera Workshop production runs Jan. 29-31, Feb. 5-7 in the Paul Davenport Theatre (Talbot College) and gives students an opportunity to perform one of the great standards – first performed in Prague in 1787.
The story revolves around the young nobleman, Don Giovanni, who has led a life of amorous conquests. However, he is about to meet his match in three women: Elvira, who still loves him despite being discarded; Donna Anna, whom he tries to rape before her wedding; and Zerlina, whom he tries to lure from her peasant fiancé.
UWOpera Workshop was the first North American university to use Surtitles (Canadian Opera trademark) to project translations. Students auditioned to participate in the program, directed by Theodore Baerg and Sophie Roland.
