Brescia University College is organizing several events next week to help raise funds for the Haitian earthquake relief effort.
In a letter to faculty, staff and students, Brescia Principal Colleen Hanycz says the institution has “no choice but to respond.”
As such, the following fundraising activities will be held:
Community Lunch
On Monday, Jan. 25 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Brescia will host a Pizza Sale in the foyer outside the Auditorium. Purchase a slice of pizza, a cold drink, and a piece of cake for $5. Additional pieces of pizza are $2.
Text on Tuesday
Everyone is invited to text their support by making a $5 donation on their cell phone on Tuesday, Jan. 26.
Through a system set up by the Mobile Giving Foundation — which was created by Canada’s largest wireless companies in September — cell phone users can send donations of $5 to:
• Red Cross by texting “REDCROSS” to 30333
• Salvation Army Canada by texting the word “Haiti” to 45678
• Plan Canada by texting “Haiti” to 30333
• World Vision by texting the word “world” to 45678
A mobile donation takes two steps: First, text in the code to make a donation. You will receive a return text message to confirm the donation. Reply to the message to confirm the donation to have it accepted. A confirmation message will be sent to you. All of the money collected goes directly to Haiti and no extra fees are added.
Matching our Money
The money raised at the Pizza Sale will be matched up to a maximum of $2,000 by
Brescia. Income tax receipts for any gift over $10 in value will be issued.
Cheques can be made out to Brescia (with Haiti in the memo line). All donations will be forwarded to Development and Peace – the official international development organization of the Catholic Church in Canada.
Development and Peace has been working with the Bishops of Canada to help in Haiti and has raised $350,000 for the cause. Brescia’s contribution to Development and Peace will be matched by The Government of Canada, who, through CIDA, will match the contributions of individual Canadians to registered charities in support of humanitarian, recovery, and reconstruction efforts in response to the earthquake in Haiti, up to a total of $50 million.
