Clarke Singer, the Mustang’s men’s hockey team’s head coach, won his 250th career game on Saturday, Jan. 16 with a gutsy 4-2 win over a feisty York Lions team.
Singer’s Mustangs had a setback Friday Jan. 15 as their 16-game win streak was unexpectedly snapped in a 6-4 loss to the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) Ridgebacks.
But the Mustangs rebounded and now set their sights on a road trip to play Brock in St. Catharines on Jan. 22 and then a rematch at the John Labatt Centre against UOIT on Jan. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
Western Mustangs varsity teams had another strong weekend.
Both the men’s and women’s volleyball teams won games, with the women winning in straight sets over Lakehead in Thunder Bay and the men winning a five-set thriller over Wilfrid Laurier in London.
Western’s women’s basketball team hosted a successful Shoot For A Cure game, raising more than $3,000 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. While the Mustangs men’s team lost to Brock, 85-80, despite leading through most of the game, the women came back to defeat the Badgers 76-75 in an overtime barnburner.
The Western women’s hockey teams lost a pair of games, including a shootout loss to Brock, despite taking early leads in both games.
Finally, the Mustangs men’s and women’s curling and track and field teams had strong showings in their weekend events. More information, scores and recaps are available at www.westernmustangs.ca.
