While three of the planned Alternative Spring Break (ASB) program trips were unfortunately cancelled due to weather, dozens of Western students and staff are still spread out around the world making a difference in a number of communities.
Jointly organized by Housing and Ancillary Services and The Student Success Centre, the ASB program currently has volunteers in London, Winnipeg, Arkansas, Louisiana and the Dominican Republic helping out by teaching youth, assisting food banks and building homes.
Rob Esselment, Director of Government Relations at Western, is in New Orleans assisting with Habitat for Humanity. He is sharing his and the student’s experiences throughout the week. The campus can follow their daily blog, and send messages to students and team leaders, at https://atwestern.typepad.com/asb2010/.
Upon their return, students and team leaders will share what they’ve learned with the campus community. An Alternative Spring Break showcase is scheduled for Mar. 23 (3:30 – 5 p.m.) in the David S. Chu International Student Centre.
