Law scholar Philippe Sands will speak on ‘Torture, Lawyers and Accountability’ at the 2010 Pensa Lecture in Human Rights in the Faculty of Law Mar. 3.
Sands, a distinguished English international lawyer and legal scholar, has written and spoken widely on international human rights issues over the past two decades. He is a professor of International Law at University College, London (U.K.), and his most recent book is Torture Team: Rumsfeld’s Memo and the Betrayal of American Values.

In the book, he reveals the story of the team of high-ranking lawyers in the White House and the Pentagon who advised the Bush Administration on how to circumvent the domestic and international prohibitions on torture after 2001.
Sands will speak in the Faculty of Law, Room 38, beginning at 7:30 p.m. A reception will be held in the law library following the lecture. All are welcome to attend this free public lecture.
The Pensa Lecture Series in Human Rights was created by Harrison Pensa LLP in 2007 to honour the many social achievements of Claude and Elaine Pensa, and their commitment to human rights and community service. The first three Pensa Lectures were delivered by Michael Ignatieff, Ian Binnie and Richard Goldstone.
