TUESDAY 5:30 p.m: Work crews have completed repairs to a broken Lake Huron pipeline that supplies water to 350,000 consumers, including residents of London. Full service to all customers is expected this evening.
The 48-inch pipeline broke about 2 a.m. Monday in Huron County near the community of Mount Carmel. No cause have been given although some officials pointed to the age of the pipeline – built in the mid-1960s.
Residents are still being asked to curtail non-essential water use until full service has been restored.
London is supplied by pipelines from Lake Huron and Lake Erie. In response to the emergency, the supply from Lake Erie has been increased to full capacity.
However, to maintain adequate storage of water in area reservoirs, municipalities and consumers are being asked to voluntarily reduce their water consumption.
Water Use Reductions
The following water use reductions are recommended:
* Limit or postpone indoor residential use of water. Consider using dishwashers and clothes washers after the emergency period has ended
* Take a brief shower rather than a bath, or consider delaying until after the emergency period has ended.
* Reduce toilet flushing as much as possible. Consider flushing the toilet every second use.
* Suspend unnecessary use of water for industrial or commercial establishments, as well as construction sites, such as washing operations.
