Western Mustangs quarterback Michael Faulds is one of four Canadian university athletes nominated for the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Male Athlete of the Year.
The 18th Annual BLG Awards (Borden Ladner Gervais LLP) was established in 1993 to recognize the top female and male athletes from universities affiliated with CIS. Also up for the Doug Mitchell trophy are University of Calgary’s Erik Glavic (football), University of New Brunswick’s Hunter Tremblay (hockey) and McGill University’s Francis Verreault-Paul (hockey).
Micheal Faulds is up for the Doug Mitchell Trophy as Canadian Interuniversity Sport Male Athlete of the Year.
Faulds, the holder of two CIS records for single-season passing yards (3,033 yards) and career passing yards (10,811 yards), says it’s an honour to be nominated “for such a prestigious award.”
“I would love to play professionally in the Canadian Football League and once my playing career is over, I would like to coach in Canada,” says Faulds, a Masters of Kinesiology (Coaching) student. “I suffered a pretty bad knee injury this past season. I’m striving to get back healthy and would love to get a shot in the CFL and be playing as long as I can.”
The last Mustang athlete to win the BLG Award was men’s soccer player Michael Potts who earned the national honour in 1999-2000. Former Mustangs football player Tim Tindale, who went on to a career in the National Football League with the Buffalo Bills, is the only other previous Western winner, earning the honour in 1993-94.
The four women nominated include top female athlete of the year (Jim Thompson Trophy) include Cape Breton University’s Kelsey Hodgson (basketball), University of Montreal’s Véronique Maranda (soccer), Wilfrid Laurier University’s Liz Knox (hockey) and university of British Columbia’s Liz Cordonier (volleyball).
The award winners, who receive a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship, will be announced April 26. The awards show will premiere on TSN on Sunday, May 16 at 11 a.m.
