Penviro, a company started by Western students that markets recyclable ballpoint pens to schools for resale for fundraising, won the 2010 Business 2257 Feasibility Study Competition.
The winning team, which includes Cyrus Aga, Lauren Curk, Stephen Halas, Brittney Hartlen, Adelaide Johnson, Victoria McDougall and Alexander Miller, took home the Robert G. Siskind Entrepreneurial Award.
Business 2257 is a second-year business course designed to enhance quantitative and qualitative decision-making skills. The top three feasibility study projects from the class go on to compete for the Robert G. Siskind Entrepreneurial Award. Runner-ups included Chefadamics.com, an online cooking resource for post-secondary students offering advice on preparing affordable meals, and Motion Media Incorporated, which proposes to offer silent advertising on LCD monitors on city buses.
Judges included Joel McLean, President and CEO of InfoTech Research Group, and Lisa Harrison, VP of Organizational Development at Autodata Solutions. They lauded the Penviro concept for its low risk and potentially high return. Penviro has already obtained orders for its product in London and plans to expand across Canada.
The award was established in 1990 to commemorate Siskind’s honourary degree from The University of Western Ontario and his contributions to the university.
