Students wanting to study around the clock for final exams now have a place other than the University Community Centre to do it.
The D.B. Weldon Library will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week from April 9-30. The change in the operating schedule is a pilot project based on student requests for a library to be open all hours during the exam period.
The decision was a result of consultation between Western Libraries management and student leaders.
“As a user-centred service, Western Libraries wants to meet student needs and we clearly heard that the library is the preferred place to study during exams,” says Catherine Wilkins, Assistant University Librarian for The D.B. Weldon Library.
Students who enter Weldon Library between 9 p.m. and 8 a.m. will be required to present a valid Western ONECard (Western ID) during the exam period. Weldon Library will be staffed by security during extended hours.
If you have trouble staying awake during those late nights, Quotes Café in Weldon Library will be pouring coffee and other beverages 24/7, along with having a healthy supply of late-night snacks from April 9-26.
Although not open all night, Taylor Library will feature extended hours until 2 a.m. during the exam period; Western ID will also be required to enter after 9 p.m.
Student leaders are launching a ‘safe study’ campaign to coincide with 24/7 library hours, which will focus on healthy and safe study habits.
Funding for some of the additional costs for extended hours has been provided by a number of student groups, including: Arts and Humanities Students’ Council, Social Science Students’ Council, Brescia University College Students’ Council, Huron University College Students’ Council and the UWO Millennium Laureates. Western Libraries will also be contributing to the extra costs.
At the conclusion of the exam period Western Libraries will consult with students to gauge the effectiveness of having 24/7 library hours during exams.
