Western Law alumnus James Peterson has been appointed co-chair of the Canada – United States Law Institute (CUSLI) along with former Michigan governor James Blanchard.
Peterson has served as Minister of International Trade, Secretary of State (International Financial Institutions), and Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance.

He is the author of numerous articles and studies for Canadian and foreign publications on international business, investment, taxation and fiscal policy. He is currently Counsel with the firm Fasken Martineau.
“This is a great honour. I have devoted my career in law and public service to building greater presence for Canada on the world stage and to strengthening our relationships with our trading partners,” says Peterson. “The CUSLI is an ideal forum for me to continue this work.”
CUSLI serves as a forum for governments, business leaders, scholars and others to examine and resolve the issues confronting the Canada-United States relationship.
Blanchard is also former United States Ambassador to Canada. Currently, he is a partner with DLA Piper and Co Chair of its Government Affairs Practice Group.
The CUSLI is a bi-national, not-for-profit, multi-disciplinary entity created jointly in 1976 by Western and Case Western Reserve University School of Law located in Cleveland, Ohio.
