Physical Plant wants to warn members of the campus community about the latest weed menace making the news, Giant Hogweed, which is growing in some areas on campus.
Giant Hogweed has been identified in several areas of London. It poses a serious threat to anyone touching the plant and having any plant residue on their skin.
The residue can cause a serious skin reaction, and if the resin touches the eye it can cause blindness.
Giant Hogweed
The weed has been spotted along the east side of the Thames River, at the Baldwin Flats. There was also a plant removed from the walking path behind the Support Services Building, near the Medway Creek pathway.
The City of London Parks Department has found several plants within their park and trails system. They are removing some plants, however, due to its nature they are looking at some form of removal/disposal procedure to ensure the safety of staff and the general public.
If you spot the plant, do not touch it. Contact the Service Centre for removal at 519-661-3304 or e-mail ppdhelp@uwo.ca.
