With the Great Hall full of family, friends and colleagues, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry Dean Carol Herbert was praised by all in attendance for her contributions to not only the field of medicine, but to The University of Western Ontario during her 11 years as dean.
“While we celebrate Carol’s years as dean, it is just one chapter of her leadership at Western, as she will return in a different role as a scholar and leader,” says Western President Amit Chakma.
Herbert will continue teaching and conducting research as a member of Western’s departments of Family Medicine and Pathology.
“She is a great leader for her faculty and a voice of leadership at Western with her energy and ability to think outside the box,” adds Chakma. “She has created a legacy and a sense of excellence, and I am thrilled she’s staying at Western.”
Over the next year, Herbert will return to the west coast to serve as a visiting professor at the University of British Columbia’s School of Population and Public Health, along with travelling and spending time with family and friends.
“She has been so helpful in educating me about health care and the issues surrounding it,” says Ontario Minister of Health and Long-Term Care Deb Matthews. “Her enormous leadership skills have the ability to gather people together on issues of importance. She has had a remarkable impact well beyond the walls of Western.”
Herbert will step down as dean at the end of the month. Michael Strong has been named the new dean of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.
