A team of researchers from across southwest Ontario will exhibit the latest in commercially-viable products and processes Wednesday, Oct. 13 at The University of Western Ontario’s Research Park in the Convergence Centre.
The Ontario Regional Advanced Manufacturing and Materials (AMM) Showcase, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., features approximately 20 scientific research teams that work within the C4 Consortium, Southwest Ontario’s Technology Transfer Community.
C4 fosters innovation in southwest Ontario by promoting technology transfer and commercialization. Comprised of 10 universities and research institutions, C4 members coordinate their resources, cooperate with governmental and industrial bodies, collaborate in multi-disciplinary research to solve real world problems, and commercialize the results of their research.
Some of the research on display in Western’s Convergence Centre includes an environmentally friendly, energy efficient process to convert scrap tires into a new, quality recycled tire-derived polymer product called ‘tyromer’ and an innovative approach using magneto-rheological (MR) fluids which eliminates the need for multiple motors, gears, and sensors in mechanisms. MR fluids are smart materials that instantaneously and reversibly change viscosity in the presence of a magnetic field, allowing them to transfer force and torque.
Hosted by WORLDiscoveries and C4, AAM Showcase also features keynote speeches by Claude Legrand, the Co-Creator and Managing Partner of Ideaction and Robert Angel, President of The Gilford Group Limited.
Surface Science Western will also celebrate the opening of its new facilities at the Research Park on Wednesday, October 13. The laboratory will be open for tours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will also be workshop from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the North Hall at Windermere Manor, which highlights how Surface Science Western assists manufacturers, processors and researchers.
The AMM Showcase is sponsored by Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE).
