The University of Western Ontario expects few immediate implications to its operation after a Canada Post rolling strike was called late last night. Although in the short run, some considerations will need to be made by the on-campus community, applicants and alumni now that 48,000 postal workers are out.
Although “business as usual” right now for Canada Post, no mail or parcels will be delivered on campus should the strike evolve beyond a rotating strike. However, Western’s central mailroom will operate as normal delivering all internal correspondence via campus mail.
Applicants to first-entry undergraduate programs should ensure final transcripts and other supporting documents are couriered to the university for an admissions decision. These transcripts need to be sent to the Undergraduate Admissions Office, The University of Western Ontario, Room 3140, Western Student Services Building, London, ON, Canada N6A 3K7.
Any transcripts, official Western letters or other documents to be mailed by the Office of the Registrar to a location in Canada will not be delivered. As Western uses a third-party service for U.S. and international mail, delivery to these destinations will not be impacted.
To ensure documents are delivered in a timely manner, the following options are available:
- Arrange to pick up transcript or official Western letter at Student Central, Western Student Services Building, Room 1120;
- Select to have your transcript or official Western letter delivered by courier – $15 within Ontario; $25 within Canada;
- Select to have your documents faxed (originals will follow once the Canada Post labour disruption is over) – $12 per fax location.
For further information, visit the Office of the Registrar’s Canada Post Service Disruption website.
The university’s ability to communicate directly with its alumni base will also be interrupted.
Distribution of the spring/summer issue of the Alumni Gazette as well as information about Homecoming 2011, both scheduled to be mailed in coming days, may be delayed if the stoppage expands. Please visit the Alumni Gazette and/or Alumni Western websites to get the latest news and information.
If you have sent a donation to the university via Canada Post, every priority will be made to provide you with a tax receipt as soon as possible post-strike. Until such time, donors who wish to make a gift to the university can do so online or via courier to Development Office, The University of Western Ontario, Westminster Hall, Suite 110, London, ON N6A 3K7.
