One of Canada’s leading minds on government responsibility and transparency will speak on “Opening Doors, Minds and Government” as part of Western Law’s Distinguished Speaker Series.
André Marin, the Ombudsman of Ontario, will deliver the public talk at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12 in the Faculty of Law’s Moot Court Room.
The 2009 recipient of the OBA’s Tom Marshall Award for outstanding contributions by a public sector lawyer, Marin has been Ontario’s Ombudsman since 2005. Prior to his appointment, Marin served as an assistant Crown Attorney, a professor at the University of Ottawa, the director of Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit and Canada’s first Military Ombudsman.
A sought-after speaker on issues of ethics, oversight and organizational malaise, Marin is perhaps best known for breathing new life in the efficacy of the Ombudsman’s Office. Under his direction, the office has investigated some of Ontario’s biggest controversies, including scandals at the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation and the expansion of police powers for the 2010 G20 Summit meeting in Toronto.
Marin is a graduate of the University of Ottawa law school (magna cum laude) with degrees in both common and civil law.
