In support of the WWF’s Earth Hour 2012 initiative, Western’s Facilities Management Division is asking the campus to turn out non-essential lighting. At 8:30 p.m. Saturday, March 31, Western joins the world in turning off the lights for one hour to demonstrate how individual actions add up to make a big difference.
“Everyone plays a role in energy conservation at Western,” said Beverley Ayeni, Facilities Management energy and environment manager. “Switching off lights is a simple way to show your commitment to a better planet and Earth Hour is a good reminder of the responsibility we all have.”
Facilities Management is asking weekend caretaking staff to switch off all non-essential lighting as they perform their duties on campus. Faculty, staff and students are also encouraged to turn off lights and unplug electronics on Friday as they leave campus for the weekend.
Housing Services is asking the thousands of students who call campus home during the academic year to contribute to Western’s conservation effort as well.
Last year, Earth Hour reached 1.8 billion people in 5,200 cities. In Canada, more than 10 million Canadians and thousands of businesses participated in 275 cities across the country.
