Basketball player Laura Dally and track athlete Scott Leitch have been named the Western Mustangs Goodlife Fitness Athletes of the Week for Jan. 21-27.
Dally, a fourth-year Social Sciences student, posted a triple-double on Friday night, helping the Mustangs to an 80-68 victory over the visiting Lakehead Thunderwolves. Dally finished the evening with 13 points, 10 assists and 14 rebounds to record the triple-double while also adding two blocks and four steals. The Bright’s Grove native had a strong game the next night, putting in 18 points, nine rebounds, and six assists as Western fell in overtime to Lakehead 80-83.
“Laura Dally is one of those players who is a pleasure to coach and she is always looking to improve her game,” head coach Brian Cheng said. “The rare triple-double is a testament of her abilities when she is supported by her teammates. One of her teammates had to give Laura the ball for her to score. One of her teammates had to score when Laura passed the ball. All of her teammates had to help her out by boxing their checks out for Laura to grab rebounds. I am so proud of her achievements on and off the court.”
Leitch, a fourth-year Arts and Humanities student, took first place in the 600m at the Don Wright Team Challenge this past weekend at Thompson Arena. Leitch’s time of 1:19:63 fell just shy of breaking the meet and arena record, but is Leitch’s fastest ever season opening time. Saturday’s time also ranks the London native in first place in the CIS in the 600m.
“Scott ran strong, leading from start to finish, and he demonstrated why he is one of the best in the CIS. He has also been an exceptional role model to teammates Matt Muldoon and Triphon Moodie and will continue to help bring the best out of them,” head coach Vickie Croley said.
